Kent Yomogida,

Are you interested in an opportunity for your child to play a higher level of AYSO soccer this season?

The AYSO Extra Play Program offers players the opportunity to play at a more competitive level than the Recreational level.   There are NO ADDITIONAL Registration fees to play in this program.

The Extra program was developed for U9 through U14 players with advanced abilities and soccer skills. This AYSO program recognizes the needs of the more competitive player.  Many participating regions will have Boys and Girls teams in U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13 and U14 brackets.  Players participating in this program will compete against other Extra teams from different regions and local areas.  While many Extra games will be played within Area L (South Orange County), some games will be played outside of Area L.  There will be Saturday and Sunday games with the season lasting from September to December.  Many teams will continue in the Spring season as a Select team and participate in tournaments, if they wish.

Players must tryout and be selected to play in the Extra program.

Player evaluation is made by a committee based on the player’s soccer skills, attitude and competitiveness.   Players must attend at least one of the scheduled tryouts to be eligible but both tryouts are recommended as players with the highest ratings from both tryouts will be selected to the team.

AYSO Extra players may not play soccer for any other team or organization during the Fall season September through December.  (This includes guest playing on a club roster)

All age brackets are not guaranteed.  We will need qualified coaches and ENOUGH qualified players at tryouts to form teams in each age bracket.

This program provides a team for each age level, unlike Recreational soccer where two ages are combined in a division.  For example, the recreational program combines the ten year old players and eleven year old players in the Under 12 year old (U12) division. The Extra program provides a team for under 11 year olds (U11) and a separate division for under 12 year olds (U12).  There are also teams for Under 9 (U9) and Under 10 (U10) players. As with all other soccer leagues, ages are based on the player's age as of July 31 of a given year.

In order to maximize player development, the younger ages play with reduced size teams and fewer players on the field. This increases the number of touches each player gets during the game and makes tactical decisions easier as they are developing their awareness of their teammates and game situation. This allows them to grow into the game at an appropriate pace to maximize their learning and development. See the Section Extra page for further details on the program.

AYSO Extra program coaches have been trained and earned certifications to at this competitive level.  Coaches are screened to ensure they have a clear understanding of the game, as well as the principles and objectives of AYSO.

Requirements for Extra coaches:

Current volunteer application on file at the National Office

Be an AYSO trained coach for the age at which they are coaching as well as additional requirements.

Be in good standing with the Region, Area, Section, and AYSO

Be approved by the Region Board of Directors, and
